- Description
The Gunpowder Tea to which the gin owes its name is a green tea of Chinese origin that is slowly dried, then the leaves are rolled into balls that resemble the shape of gunpowder (gunpowder in English). The taste is fresh and bitter with a slight spiciness. This gin is produced by The Shed Distillery, the first distillery in its 101-year history positioned in the west of Ireland, in one of the country’s most rural and unspoiled areas, in the province of Connacht, in Drumshanbo. Founder PJ Rigney chose this area precisely because of its isolation, and here, following numerous trips to the East, he decided to create a distillery where his curious mind could try its hand at blending exotic botanicals with local botanicals, drawing inspiration from the oldest Eastern distilling traditions. In fact, its copper stills are medieval in style and the distillation process is very slow and artisanal. The result of his experiments was definitely a happy one, since it gave birth to Gunpowder irish Gin.
Deep in rural Ireland, on the shores of a lake, lies Drumshanbo, a small town in the heart of County Leitrim. It is the headquarters of the Shed distillery. Established in 2014, it marks a return to traditional distillation with medieval copper stills.
