The best vineyards right in the heart of the famous Bolgheri area. The name Campo Alla Giostra dei Cavalli is in honor of Varenne’s 20th Genetliaco.
Deep ruby red with a clear purplish sheen. The nose is broad and sharp, with notes of blackberries and cassis, ripe peppers, cocoa and licorice. On the palate very harmonious, with good structure, the finish is long with pleasant notes of overripe red fruit.
Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, then malolactic fermentation. 18 months in French oak barrels, half new and half used. Stored in bottle for another six months.
The estate, which bears the name “Donna Olimpia 1898” (Olimpia Alliata, Lady of Biserno and bride of Gherardo della Gherardesca, who gave her name to the estate in 1898 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of their marriage), has an area of about 60 hectares all located in the Bolgheri DOC and covers a strip of land that goes from Km 167.8 of the Aurelia state highway inland for about 1.2 km; the morphology of the land is flat and cultivated for 45 hectares with vineyards and partly with arable land.
