- Description
Bricco dell’Uccellone di Braida is one of the wines that changed the modern history of Italian wine. An evergreen, so to speak, in the best sense of the word.
Very intense ruby red color with garnet hues. Rich, complex bouquet of remarkable concentration and depth; hints of red and small fruits are particularly evident, in the background some minty spices, vanilla and licorice. Generous flavor, full-bodied and remarkably structured, perfect amalgam of the characters of the grape variety and the contribution of wood, in a combination of great softness and great class, very long aromatic persistence. Accompanies large meat dishes, roasts, even with sauces, aged cheeses.
Maceration on the skins takes place at a controlled temperature and lasts 20 days. The wine then goes into oak barrels where it ages for 12 months, then one more year in the bottle.
Made from 100% Barbera grapes from estate vineyards in Rocchetta Tanaro.
It is already wonderful to drink, but as always it will improve in the cellar for a few years.
The Big Bird was the nickname of a woman who lived in the vineyard hill. Her nose resembled a bird’s beak, plus she always wore black: this earned her a nickname in the village. Hence the name Bricco dell Uccellone.
The history of Braida is linked to that of Rocchetta Tanaro, a small town in the Monferrato area of Asti.
“My village is not a surprise, it’s ten vineyards, six houses, one church”: these are the words of chansonnier Paolo Frola, who is also the conduit doctor of Rocchetta. The song was written with Gianni Mura, drinking Barbera di Rocchetta. Of those ten vineyards sung by Frola, some are Braida. They were Grandpa Giuseppe’s, then passed to Papa Giacomo, now Giuseppe and Raffaella Bologna cultivate them. The company was born from the enthusiasm, passion and entrepreneurial courage of a “Doc” Rocchettese, Giacomo Bologna.
“Braida” was the nickname that Giacomo’s father, Giuseppe Bologna, a carter by profession, earned while playing elastic ball because of his resemblance to champion of the sport. From his father Giacomo he inherited, along with the nickname, a love of sports and horses and a large Barbera vineyard in the hills of Rocchetta.
