Although Bowmore is the oldest distillery on the island of Islay, the title of “Best Known Distillery” definitely belongs to Lagavulin. This is certainly also due to the fact that it belongs to Diageos’ Classic Malt Selection. He has belonged to this group since 1997. However, it was founded in 1816 by John Johnston. With its direct neighbors Ardbeg and Laphroaig it belongs to the so-called “Kildalton Distilleries.”

Lagavulin is located on the island of Islay; the name in German means valley with a mill. In 1816 John Johnston built the first distillery, and a year later Archibald Campbell built a second, larger one. Lagavulin produces one of the peppiest malts around, a must for any Islay malt lover.
