- Description
Businessman Alexandre Gabriel turned to cognac when he formed a business relationship with a family of French winemakers in 1989 and founded Maison Ferrand. But he was soon on the verge of diversifying the range, so during his travels in the 1990s he built important relationships with Caribbean rum producers and founded Marle Plantation Rum. Maison Ferrand has now also purchased the West Indian rum distillery in Barbados, a country of origin often represented in the plantation rum range. The collection includes five product ranges: vintage rums as representatives of a specific country and a specific vintage, exclusive blends, bar classics for cocktail making, single cask bottlings, and the extremely limited Extreme Special editions.
The Plantation Experience Box contains six artisanal rums in 10 cl bottles, giving a first impression of the diverse product range. Included are:
- Plantation 3 Stars White Rum 41.2%: intended for blending, a blend of Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad rums filtered over activated charcoal.
- Plantation Original Dark Rum 40%: blend of younger Barbados rum and Jamaican rum aged for more than ten years with three to six months aging in French barrels.
- Plantation Grande Réserve 40%: blend of Barbados rum aged up to three years, matured in French oak for one year
- Plantation Gran Añejo 42%: Blend of Guatemalan and Belizean rums with a one-year aging in Cognac Ferrand barrels.
- Plantation Barbados XO 40%: anniversary edition with twelve-year-old Barbados rum aged in France.
- Plantation Xaymaca Extra Dry Rum 43%: With Xaymaca Extra Dry Rum, Alexandre Gabriel’s team presents a Jamaican rum in its most original form, distilled in double retort stills.
After successfully taking over the traditional but aging Pierre Ferrand cognac house in 1989, Alexander Gabriel launched the Citadelle gin brand in 1996 and just a year later the Plantation rum brand. But how does a cognac producer get to rum? Alexander Gabriel decides to sell his highly valued barrels to producers who ask him. Requests continue to come in for cognac barrels used to refine rum during the aging process, especially from the Caribbean and Latin America. Your interest is piqued. So he travels to the Caribbean to get an idea of exactly what happens to these barrels and is overwhelmed and fascinated by the versatility and range that this distillate offers. So he decides to turn the situation around and from now on he buys from the producers the barrels full of rum, which he then brought to France and then he takes them under his wing and thus decides in which cognac barrels they will continue to mature and for how long. He has continued to professionalize and improve this concept, which is why he was voted Rum Blender of the Year at the 2012 Golden Rum Barrels Awards. Today, Plantation Rum offers four different lines, all of which are of excellent quality and cover the spectrum in a way that both bartenders and rum enthusiasts are happy with.
