The Guigal winery was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal who, having settled in the town of Ampuis in the immediate postwar period, bought a small vineyard in the AOC Cote-Rotie area, where it seems the first vines were planted by the Romans 2,400 years ago. In his early years, Etienne worked closely with one of the region’s most prestigious maisons, Etablissements Vidal- Fleury, which in the mid-1980s, was purchased by Etienne’s son Marcel, who was forced to take over while still very young from his father. Marcel in 1995 bought the Chateau d’Ampuis, an old 12th-century fortress, transformed into a chateau in the 16th century, of which he carried out a radical renovation. The domaine, whose vineyards now cover an area of about 60 hectares, located on both banks of the Rhone, is divided into four parts and includes some of the most prestigious plots in the area.
The winery is located in the castle’s basement, which measures about 3 hectares between large rooms and narrow corridors, where the wines age in about 5,000 wooden barrels that, since 2003, have been produced in the castle itself.
