Atop the hill of Rosazzo in Friuli Colli Orientali lie Serena Palazzolo’s 12 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards. The soil here, known locally as Ponca, is a limestone-rich shale filled with deposits from ancient oceans. These Schioppettino vines, aged between 17 and 60 years, are grown on less than one hectare. The wine ages in 228 L neutral barrels for 18 months. Medium-bodied, firm tannins, peppery and fragrant aromas and fresh acidity make this wine an ideal match for game and grilled meats.

Just over fifteen hectares, conducted organically, with no use of chemical fertilizers or herbicides, and no use of systemic treatments or insecticides. The Ronco del Gnemiz company, born more than 30 years ago from a shared passion between Serena Palazzolo and Christian Patat, has set up its work with full respect for the environment and the ecosystem. We are in San Giovanni al Natisone, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, in the province of Udine, where grapes from Friulano, Sauvignon and Chardonnay, and then also from Merlot, Cabernet and Schioppettino, are used to make a limited but high-quality production. A little more than 30 thousand bottles a year, which come from winemaking that respects the natural characteristics of the fruit: soft pressings, fermentations in barrique, no malolactic fermentation and cold decanting for whites, while for reds maceration on the skins in steel, and long aging in wood. In this way, labels are born that follow neither fashions nor trends, but express the true essence of the lands of Friuli. Whites with a classic character, elegant and pleasant, and reds that are austere and long aging. Wines, those that go by the name of “Ronco del Gnemiz,” faithful mirror of their territory, true and authentic, sincere expression of the best Colli Orientali del Friuli.
