It has been just under two centuries since the French hills of Hermitage in the Rhone Valley held the secret of an encounter that saw Antoine Jaboulet settle in the lands that would inextricably mark his destiny. Indeed, it was 1834 when Antoine himself began cultivating his own vineyards, which by dint of hard work, passion, toil and the sweat of his brow, began to provide him with wines of exceptional quality. Then Antoine was succeeded by his sons Henri and Paul, with the latter being the one from whom the Domaine “Paul Jaboulet Aîné” would be named. From then on, from generation to generation, the domaine was managed by the Jaboulets until 2006, when the enterprise was purchased by the Frey family, longtime winemakers in the Champagne region and owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux. With Caroline Frey, who is currently not only the owner but also the winemaker of the domaine, the “Paul Jaboulet Aîné” winery, which has retained its historical name, follows a well-defined approach, explained directly in Caroline’s own words: “there is no great wine without great grapes, so at Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné vine culture is at the heart of our activity. Each plant must ripen its grapes under the best conditions so as to release to the fruit what it takes from the soil. Eager to preserve the quality of our soils and the diversity of our lands, we have been following organic farming standards since 2013, and thanks to efforts to minimize our environmental impact, we obtained ISO 14001 certification in 2012. Wines labeled “Paul Jaboulet Aîné” are made from high-quality grapes, processed according to careful winemaking and aged with great finesse. Belonging to the best appellations of the Rhone Valley, these are wines that represent the purest expression of the terroir of origin, and are characterized by their balance, complexity, and longevity.”
