Oliviero Toscani: No wine? No heavean, no hell In the late 1960s my father Oliviero Toscani had enough courage and foresight to build his own house in Casale Marittimo: a tiny hamlet on the Tuscan coast, in the hills and a few kilometers from Bolgheri. He bought a small farm with some land all around and brought two horses. Every year he invested all his savings by buying land. He didn’t believe in bricks but he believed in the earth. He was damn right! My father has always been a determined, subversive and visionary creative. These same qualities have made him achieve an exceptional career and build a farm of indisputable beauty. After planting more than 4000 olive trees, raising horses, Cinta Senese pigs, Angus cows and carrier pigeons in Appaloosa, my father and I felt that something was missing from our project: a vineyard. Towards the end of the 90s we were inspired by our friend Angelo Gaja and we decided to plant one of the most evocative vineyards in Tuscany. Thanks to a team of experienced winemakers such as Attilio Pagli and Valentino Ciarla and agronomist Federico Curtaz, we finally planted a beautiful amphitheater-shaped vineyard 350 meters above sea level with a breathtaking view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
