Monferrato Rosso once bottled needs a few more months rest until it has deepened its particular characteristic flavor and develops into an aromatic, dry red wine. It impresses with a wonderfully earthy almond scent that is also reminiscent of truffles. Nebbiolo wines take a few years to develop their full flavor. Therefore, they should definitely not be enjoyed too early. Our Monferrato Rosso will taste for 3-5 years about 6 months after bottling.

Then it is a strong, dry wine with pleasant acidity and hints of tobacco and dark chocolate.

Nebbiolo is an ancient variety, probably the oldest in Piedmont. Known as the red grape of choice in ancient times-also based on Barolo and Barbaresco-it thrives optimally on the limestone soils of the Monferrato and Langhe hills.

Late-ripening, it is harvested only in October and provides an expressive, tannic wine.

The first 2009 vintage of the new Monferrato Rosso confirmed that the microclimate in the Loazzolo region particularly favors the ripening of Nebbiolo. The Rio del Lupo farm produces its Nebbiolo grapes on a southwest-facing slope, which is about 360 meters above sea level. This location provides the vines with almost all-day exposure to the sun, which is often shielded by the typical local milky haze: the “Fog.” This is where Nebbiolo gets its name.

One of Europe’s oldest cultural landscapes-it was love at first sight: almost 20 years ago, during the last phase of her active professional life, TV journalist and author Ute Diergarten-Wandel and physicist and entrepreneur Bernhard Wandel had a long -dream dear. They took over the Rio del Lupo winery in Piedmont, which has been in operation for generations. How come? Because enjoying wine for the couple means joy of life, it is an integral part of good food culture, and making wine promised to become a passion. This is exactly how it happened. With great success and commitment, both have since dedicated themselves to winemaking native grape varieties from this special region of Monferrato, now a World Heritage Site.
