The nose has an intense array of fruit aromas that blend with a slight vanilla note.
TASTE
Mineral notes supported by lively acidity are evident on the palate. A refined wine with character, good aging potential and very elegant.
Wine made from Carminoir grapes, from a vineyard in Gudo with vines of an average age of about 20 years grown on south-facing soils characterized by granitic gneiss-type moraine soils. Production is about 800 g of grapes per plant. Carminoir is an interspecific cross between Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon obtained in 1982 at the Federal Research Station in Wädenswil. The plant produces medium-sized, compact and rather short red berry clusters. Grapes are harvested two weeks before full phenolic ripeness so as to preserve good acidity that gives freshness to the wine. Vinification is by soft pressing of the grapes, fermentation takes place in 225-liter new French oak barrels, followed by aging with bâtonnage for 12 months.
Set in an unparalleled landscape, where hills drawn by vineyards frame a rural plain, Gudo is a small town where the grapevine has ancient roots. On the right bank of the Ticino River, the microclimate of the Gudese lands is ideal for producing wines of the highest quality. To discover these lands is to enjoy nature that is always in celebration.
Happily embedded in this palette of colors, the Sasso Chierico Estate covers six hectares where the harvests are repeatedly excellent year after year. Here the Antognini family, looks at their vines, as old as forty years, with the proud eyes of those who have always believed in quality, convinced that terroir should be caressed like a child. An authentic encounter with the civilization of vine and wine.
Those grapes pampered throughout the season and then vinified with passion and expertise by winemaker Luca Biffi are now encased in bottles with an elegant label. Wines that have the typical imprint of this terroir, wines that are masculine but never harsh. Wines that are an expression of a punctilious and thoughtful pursuit of quality.
